On some computers, more recent releases of Windows may require a newer USB to serial converter. The older and newer models may be distinguished by the length of cable.
USB to serial converter models
The older model has a Prolific chipset and a cable length of more than 50 cm (20”).
The newer model has an FTDI chipset and a cable length of less than 20 cm (8”).
On some computers, when the older model is used with newer releases of Windows, a variety of reported problems have been fixed by using a new model converter. Please see our troubleshooting guide before purchasing a new converter, in case your problem has a different cause.
