64-bit Vista and Windows 7

DesignaKnit 7 and Fittingly Sew and their Setup programs run under the 32-bit editions of Vista and Windows 7, but not under the 64-bit editions. This is because they are 16-bit programs, and Microsoft have withdrawn support for 16-bit programs under the 64-bit operating systems. It isn't possible to apply a quick fix to enable 16-bit programs to run under 64-bit Windows. We have a new version of DesignaKnit in development which will run under newer Windows versions but no target date for release yet.

Expert users can try installing another version of Windows under Windows 7, but there isn't any easy way to describe how to do it. Installing Microsoft's Virtual XP is not something we'd recommend you to do unless you are a computer expert, and we are unable to offer support for it. We've had mixed reports from users who have attempted it, but in general any negative feedback has been because the user’s computer did not have a sufficiently powerful chip – for instance, it will not be possible to install it on a net-book or other low-powered pc. For more detailed information, you can visit Microsoft's page on the subject: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx

If you are not sure whether you are running 32- or 64-bit editions of Windows 7 or Vista, you can find out like this:

  1. Double-click on the My Computer icon on your desktop

or

Click on the Start button, then select Computer from the right-hand side of the menu

  1. On the ribbon below the menu bar, click on System Properties

  2. In the section labelled System, the System type will show whether the Operating System is 32-bit or 64-bit

Issues with 32-bit editions of Vista and Windows 7

32-bit Vista and Windows 7 don't display the proper icons for DesignaKnit 7 or Fittingly Sew, but use a general purpose one for 16-bit programs.

The most recent release of DesignaKnit 7 corrects a problem with the Stitch Designer palette that happens under 32-bit Vista and Windows 7. Once DesignaKnit 7 has been installed, you can click here to download the update and read the instructions on how to install it.

There is one other problem with 32-bit Vista and Windows 7 that we haven't been able to correct: the interactive knitting beeps don't work. However, you can use the voice instructions, or the visual alert, to be warned of a shaping instruction or a yarn colour change.
